唐山大地震 / Aftershocks (2010 Film)

Film name: 唐山大地震 / Aftershocks
Directed by: Feng Xiaogang (冯小刚)
Produced by: Hua Yi Bros
Running time: 135 minutes
Zhang Jingchu / 张静初
Chen Daoming / 陈道明
Lu Yi / 陆毅

In the aftermath of the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, a rescue team informs a mother that her seven-year-old twins Da and Deng are trapped together under a slab of concrete. Lifting the slab in any way will kill one of her children - lifting it one way will save the daughter at the expense of her son; lifting it the other will save the son at the expense of her daughter. Heartbroken, she is forced to choose between her children, and finally decides to save the boy. Her decision, however, is overheard by her daughter, who whispers "Ma..." as the screen goes black. The mother clings to her daughter's body before being pulled away to take care of Da, "her one child who still lives." Later, in the midst of the rains following the earthquake, Deng wakes up in a sea of bodies, next to the body of her father. Reluctant to be returned to the woman who chose to abandon her, Deng is adopted, but remains emotionally scarred.

In 2008, she volunteers to join rescuers in the wake of the Sichuan earthquake and returns to China. Through the experience, she finds forgiveness for her family, and reunites with her mother and twin brother after 32 years.

Yes, this is the best movie I've watched in my entire 17 years of life.
I mean it, best, and take it that I'd forgotten about other 'best' films I've watched.
In just 135 minutes in play, this film, filled with emotions, portrayed lives of people of an Earthquake aftermath. The mother who had her husband killed in an Earthquake, has to choose to save one of her 2 children who are stucked under a slab. After a long mental battle, her whisper changed her entire life, leaving her to live remorsefully. She chose to save her son, and miraculously, her daughter survived, living with the fact that her mother 'chose' to end her life.
She hated her mother for choosing that option, and later in the film, she hated herself for being 'selfish' for thinking to have her brother die.

This film with a small budget created a miracle, leaving audiences with wet eyes after watching.
Few of the touching parts were when Wang Deng(daughter) said to her foster father:
What she couldn't forget, was the fact that her biological mother actually chose her to die.
Another was:
'How many 32 years do you have?'
As the family only reunited after 32 years of separation, and Wang Deng(daughter) held hatred for her mother for 32 years. Finding out that her mother lived in guilt, emotional agony and remorse for the past 32 years, Wang Deng(daughter) forgives her.

If there is an impartial qualifications of winners for the Oscar, this remarkable film should be considered finalist.

My words can't describe the greatness of this film, just go and catch it and feel it.
Prepare yourself tissue papers if you don't wanna wet your shirt.
Go & catch it now!

初恋红豆冰 / Ice-Kacang Puppy Love (2010 Film)

Film Name: 初恋红豆冰 / Ice-Kacang Puppy Love
Directed by: Ah Niu (阿牛)
Running time: 104 minutes
Ah Niu 阿牛 / Tan Kheng Seong 陈庆祥
Angelica Lee / 李心洁
Gary Chaw / 曹格
Victor Wong / 黄品冠
Fish Leong / 梁静茹

Based on Ah Niu's childhood experiences, the film takes us to a small town where we're introduced to a timid boy nicknamed Botak (Ah Niu), who is incapable of making a good cup of Joe at his father's old fashioned coffee shop, and his love interest Da Jia Yu (Fighting Fish played by Angelica Lee), a feisty girl who boldly beats up bullies and whose eyes can shoot darts. From there, we meet a handful of quirky supporting characters: Big troublemaker Ma Li Fan (Gary Chaw with Aaron Kwok hairstyle) who frequently challenges Jia Yu at silly bets ranging from "guli" to fish fighting; his silent sister Ma Li Bing (Fish Leong) who keeps on drinking Barlie and has a crush on Botak; and charcoal seller Prince (Victor Wong) whom Botak's overweight sister (Lim Ching Miau) dreams of marrying.

The story was set in early 80s which is based largely on Ah Niu childhood experiences where he grew up in Pulau Penang. In attempt to revive Malaysian Chinese Movie industry, he placed quite a lot of effort into this movie.
This film displayed a heart warming story that surrounds the blooming of the few puppy love with the various characters in the village.
A local production that gathers a bunch of top Malaysian Chinese Artist together, most of them are famous singers and song writers.
Director Ah Niu proved to others that he can just not only sing and write songs, he can direct a movie too.
This kampong-based film is really great, I would recommend you peeps to watch it!
But first, watch Aftershock if you haven't.
& hope that Ah Niu will come up with more great films! ^^

全城戒备 / City Under Siege (2010 Film)

Aaron Kwok / 郭富城

Sunny(Aaron Kwok) is the orphaned child of a former knife throwing master. After his father's death, he is taken in by his uncle, who allows him to perform as a clown, due to the fact that he has not apparently inherited the skills of his father; nevertheless, Sunny still has the wish to perform knife throwing. He is ridiculed and tormented by the children of his uncle, who are all skilled performers in his uncle's troupe. One day, Sunny stumbles upon the plan of the rest of the troupe to explore a cave rumored to be filled with gold. Instead of killing Sunny, they decide to use him as point for their exploration of the cave. They find crates filled with capsules, and force Sunny to open them. Inside the first are numerous plates of gold. They then try to kill Sunny, and continue opening the rest of the capsules. These contain experimental gas which transform them into superhuman monsters.

Hmmm... it's a not-bad film, bah.
Not much of fighting scenes and poor effect, compared to Hollywood films.
Good effort for HKFilm to come up with sci-fi based films but they should just leave it to the Americans. It's just like Hollywood coming up with Kung-fu films, cannot make it.
All these are still bearable, as they are considered not bad already, whereby Hollywood's sci-fi films are great.
Most importantly, Zhang Jingchu's screen appearances are so few!
I can't stand this at all, man!
Laughs.. Okay, lah, this film is so-so, lah.

枪王之王 / Triple Tap (2010 Film)

Running Time: 118 minutes
Louis Koo / 古天乐
Daniel Wu /
Charlene Choi / 蔡卓妍
Li Bingbing / 李冰冰
Other casts:

Alex Fong / 杜汶泽

Champion competitive marksman Ken (Louis Koo) comes across an armored van robbery. He sees a policeman held hostage and shoots and kills four of the robbers. One of the robbers escapes and the policeman survives. The case is handled by Jerry Chang (Daniel Wu), whom Ken knows from having recently beaten him in a shooting match. Ken is found not guilty in court. Soon after, Ken is attacked by the escaped robber Pang Tao (Chapman To). Their confrontation reveals a very different background story and brings about a myriad of lies and traps and changes in relationships as Jerry and Ken try to outsmart each other.

Okay, very interesting plot. I wasn't expecting such a big twist but maybe it's because of myself, I was watching that film in a not-expecting-much mode, that's why.
According to some source that I had read about last time, it's a sequel to Double Tap (2000 Film), whereby Leslie Cheung plays a role similar to Louis Koo, a shooting champion which has something to do with a shooting accident. But in Double Tap, Leslie Cheung's role was a shooting champion which turned rogue after a mentally disturbing shooting accident.

*Double Tap - To place two exact shots in the same spot to maximize marksmanship.
*Triple Tap - An upgraded version of skill mastery of Double Tap by placing three exact shots in the same spot.

Knowing that the couple have fallen out, Lun’s mother has found him a new wife, Luk Siu-Tip (Leila Tong). Out of the blue, Tip has also come with ill intentions. Lun is plunged into a complex web of intrigue and things seem to be getting on top of him...

Review part 1:
Okay... as usual, synopsis above are from other sources, but this time, I think it's really badly done. So I'll just summarise the show with what I could still remember. (I'm writing this review after watching several films & dramas)

My own Summary:
Sze Sai-Lun / 施世伦 (Bobby Au-yeung) turns dispirited after his 2 wives and children died & disappeared in the midst of sea. His magical pillow which aids him in solving mysteries cases were lost in the process too. Therefore, he started to lead a carefree life until one day, he met this medium, Kwan-Yau (Jessica Hsuen). He wanted to seek this medium's help to locate his wives, but later found out that she's a con-artist. So several things happened in between, and Sze-Lun happened to meet a new pillow fairy (Johnson Lee). Pillow fairy is still working his way up to become a deity, so he does not own much abilities, when aiding Sai-Lun in solving mysteries, he would often give out misleading hints which would take Sai-Lun a very hard time to solve. Sai-Lun eventually married Kwan-Yau, thinking that she was a great woman, but on the day of marriage, Yau found out that Lun is actually the magistrate that accused her brother as the murderer of a case 5 years ago. So Yau planted herself in Sze Family, trying to avenge.
When she finally got her chance, she was touched by how the Sze Family treated her by divorcing her, so as to get her out of trouble. Their misunderstandings were eventually cleared in the later part of the serial drama, and her brother was released after 5 years of prisonment.
Sai-Lun & Kwan-Yau's relationship were extremely good after going through live & death.

On the other hand was the Romance of Constable So Ying-tsun / Guuwalgiya Jinchun (Joel Chan) [son of the Eighth Prince] and Ting Mei-Yan (Leila Tong).
Ying-tsun thought that Mei-yan was just a daughter of a typical family which wanted to have affiliations with royalty, therefore he canceled the marriage on the day of marriage, leaving Mei-yan disheartened and brought shame to her family. She wanted to avenge for such humiliation so she set out to find this man. Before she knew that Ying-Tsun is actually Jinchun, she had a great likings on him, but after knowing, she tried all means to get him into trouble.
Both of them eventually got together after several obstacles.

Review part 2:
This show is considered a fairytale, having not just fantasy involved in the show, but also have a happy ending. Riddles & hints given out by Pillow Fairy were too hard that I couldn't get them right at all, unlike th0se in 1st series, where the hints are all straightforward & requires not much of twist-thinking.
Still, hard riddles didn't affect the show's ratings after all, but I finds the show a little bit draggy, though rather acceptable.

谈情说案 / The Mysteries of Love (2010 Drama)

Chinese Title: 谈情说案
English Title: The Mysteries of Love
Producer: Lau Kar Ho (刘家豪)
Genre: Modern, Romance & Mystery
Number of Episodes: 25
Raymond Lam / 林峰
Tavia Yeung / 杨怡
Kenneth Ma / 马国明
Bernice Liu / 廖碧儿

This is a love story between a professor and a policewoman. Their dating experience is enhanced with sense and sensibility through the application of interesting physics theories on the investigation of various crime cases.

Kingsley King (Raymond Lam) is regarded as the youngest genius in physics and he is appointed as an associate professor in a Hong Kong university. Invited by his good friend Gordon (Kenneth Ma), Senior Inspector of Police at Regional Crime Unit, Kingsley assists in cracking many mysterious crime cases and he also meets policewoman Sai Lei Mui /犀利妹 (Tavia Yeung) during the process. The rational Kingsley evaluates that he has fallen in love with Sai Lei Mui because of a neurotransmitter called phenylethylamine*. However, owing to the huge difference in their family background and life value, Kingsley fails to tackle their ever-changing relationship problems with formulas. In the end, due to life changing experiences, Kingsley realizes that love cannot be rationalized and finally admits that his feelings to Sai Lei Mui are true.

On the other hand, the romantic and uninhibited Gordon has been maintaining a sex only relationship with the journalist Nickole (Bernice Liu). Gordon doesn't believe in eternity and he is only looking for sensual pleasure in a woman. However, his belief is suddenly shattered when he learns that Nickole is going to get married.

*phenylethylamine - As Kingsley and Sai Lei Mui spends a lot of time together during their investigations on mysteries-crime, chemistry broke out between them eventually. Kingsley used this physics term to explain his 'love' for Sai Lei Mui when he offered the break-up.

This is one of the not-bad 2010 drama series I've watched.
But still not the best I've watched.
Great and fresh concept for the mystery part as they turned out to be unexpected for me.
But some were really '老更', I knew what's gonna happen..
So, very contradicting on the freshness side though.
As for acting part, I think Lau Kar Ho really did a great job there, having the casts arranged so well.
Raymond Lam's just being himself, the feel is there, perfectly well.
Tavia Yeung suits her role for being a strong & righteous yet gentle policewoman.
Kenneth Ma & Bernice Liu also had their roles illustrated adequately well.

Review :
One of the first few memorable movies that I had watched when I was young.
When I first watched it, I didn't know that all these casts were actually popular celebrities such as Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung & Aaron Kwok.
All I know was that the roles were related to Street Fighter; the first video game I had came into contact with.
Besides being related to Street fighter, Dicky Cheung appeared as Sun Goku too, the main character of Dragon ball franchise, as well as Nobita of Doraemon.
Andy Hui starred as Gian/Suneo, both the bully and rich kid role while Charlie Yeung roled as Shizuka, the girl that Nobita fantasise over.
This movie can be considered my childhood all-time favourite,
along with Ten Brothers/十兄弟 (1995 Film)
